Luther Memorial Church
This spectacular example of Gothic Revival architecture, located near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, had been ill-served by a series of poorly conceived additions and renovations over the years. The sanctuary suffered from poor lighting and acoustics, and the undercroft, which houses offices and fellowship spaces, was a confusing maze. The congregation requested that we revise the undercroft to function more efficiently and restore the church to its original grandeur.
TKWA has provided design services for a multi-phase, multi-year project including numerous components. The plan of the undercroft was revised to improve its functionality and wayfinding. Individual spaces were made readily identifiable and ADA compliant. New, historically appropriate light fixtures were designed to dramatically improve interior illumination. Transept balconies were removed and replaced with more graceful aria balconies. A magnificent new tracker organ was added. Ceiling panels in the transepts were revised for improved acoustics. Other additions have included a columbarium, improved sound system, and space for a licensed daycare facility.
