Write On, Door County
Write On, Door County is located on 40 acres of meadow, orchards, and woodlands in the heart of rural Door County–Wisconsin’s northeastern peninsula. Write On, Door County is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the work of writers, supporting readers and audiences, and developing opportunities that encourage broad participation in writing activities. Write On, Door County provides classes for youth and adults, sponsors outreach activities, and offers extended residency opportunities for writers who seek time to focus on their craft.
Currently, Write On, Door County program goals are constrained by the lack of adequate facilities, including a fully functional writing center, classroom and conference spaces, administrative support, and writer in residency spaces. The organization approached TKWA to develop a site master plan and to prepare a conceptual writing center design as a visual aid for a formal capital campaign fundraising effort.
Under Construction; Master Plan Completed 2014
Our site master plan identifies solutions to a variety of issues, including identity and visibility from the adjacent highway, minimizing the impact of required site circulation and parking, and offering a variety of new walking trails and outdoor writing spaces. The site master plan creates a gradient of spaces ranging from active public areas to more private and secluded spaces for writers. An existing farmhouse ruin is reimagined as a trellis and vine-covered structure available for quiet contemplation.
The proposed new writing center emerges an integral part of the landscape, with indoor-outdoor boundaries blurred as the land flows through a conservatory-like atrium space at the heart of the building.
