Write On, Door County

Write On, Door County is located on 40 acres of meadow, orchards, and woodlands in the heart of rural Door County–Wisconsin’s northeastern peninsula. Write On, Door County is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing the work of writers, supporting readers and audiences, and developing opportunities that encourage broad participation in writing activities. Classes are provided for youth and adults, sponsors outreach activities, and offers extended residency opportunities for writers who seek time to focus on their craft.

Their previous program goals were constrained by the lack of a fully functional writing center, classroom and conference spaces, administrative support. The organization approached TKWA to develop a site master plan and design a new writing center to anchor the property and serve as a welcoming hub for supporting their core mission.

STATUS

Master Plan Completed 2014, Writing Center Completed 2020

The site master plan identified solutions to a variety of issues, including identity and visibility from the adjacent highway, minimizing the impact of required site circulation and parking, and offering a variety of new walking trails and outdoor writing spaces. The plan also creates a gradient of spaces ranging from active public areas to more private and secluded spaces for writers.

The new writing center is an integral part of the landscape, with indoor-outdoor boundaries blurred as the land flows through a conservatory-like atrium space at the heart of the building.
